A conversation with ballerina Sherry Tay
Sherry Tay is a native of Singapore and arrived in Norman, Oklahoma in August 2006 to pursue an education in ballet at the University of Oklahoma. She will be graduating in December 2009 with a major in ballet performance and a minor in chemistry. In the following interview, Sherry discusses her thoughts about the ballet program, making friends in America, and her future plans. Contrary to popular belief, Sherry remains loyal to her culinary roots in Singapore and yearns for the familiar dishes we all know so well. Read more... Life in the Midwest: An Anecdote
It all happened during a weekend outing in Lawton, Oklahoma, a city southwest of Norman. Dan, then a freshman at the University of Oklahoma (OU), was invited by a friend, Pete, to stay for the weekend at his home in Lawton. Pete told Dan that his dad is a hunter, and that his family’s property has "some" land. When Dan arrived at Pete’s place, he got a tad envious seeing acres worth of fresh soil in Pete’s backyard. Born and raised in Penang Malaysia, Grace Leong Yit Meng, chose her studies in ballet pedagogy at The University of Oklahoma in 1997 (http://www.ou.edu/finearts/dance/). OU was in the top 20 in Dance BFA and the tuition was affordable in comparison to studies in big apple New York. Another draw was the high population of Malaysians at OU in the 90's. Teresa at the OU School of Music was her high school friend in Malaysia. Some of Yit Meng's fond memories at the OU campus are Summer Wind at the Memorial Student Union and Oval Parrington. She enjoyed her relationship with people at the dance & theatre department which were in the same building. It was very interesting to have that mix of people, she said over the phone interview, they were fun and their personality was colorful. While studying at OU, Grace also worked at the cafetaria Yoyo Yogurt where she met Sharmini and later many other Singaporeans. After graduation in 2000 Grace joined the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts as a lecturer in ballet, repertoire and dance history. She met her Singaporean husband Chris Tan who was then teaching multi-media at NAFA. The office romance was sparked at the Teachers and Sports day where faculty from different campus met. It was wedding bliss in 2005 and they were blessed with baby Anna in July 2007. Being parents has been a fulfilling mission. Anna is the apple of Chris' eye now. Anyone who meets Grace and Chris would love them very quickly. So get to know your Sooners! LATEST SOONER BABY 2008 - Share Your Joy with the Sooner Community
